Sky Sports News HD added to Virgin Media HD line up

Virgin Media has announced the addition of Sky Sports HD1 and Sky Sports HD2 for the very first time to its rapidly growing line-up of HD channels, bringing its customers the best of sport in crystal clear high definition. Featuring Premier League Football, Cricket and Rugby Union amongst a wide range of other popular sports, Sky Sports HD1 and HD2 will join ESPN HD, EuroSport HD, BBC HD and ITV1 HD giving Virgin Media customers a diverse and compelling range of HD sports to enjoy.

The new Sky Sports HD channels will be available from August 2nd and will cost just £7 per month on any TV package when subscribing to Sky Sports in standard definition. The optional HD subscription covers all available HD versions of subscribed Sky Premiums including Sky Sports HD1 and HD2 and ten Sky Movies HD channels, though high definition versions of standard channels (such as BBC, ITV1, FX, Eurosport and SyFy) remain free of additional subscription costs, giving customers a simple upgrade path to take advantage of HD content as they choose.

The addition of Sky Sports HD1 and HD2 follows Virgin Media’s deal with Sky to bring its customers a wide range of new HD channels and Red Button interactive services*. The deal also adds Sky 1HD, Sky Arts HD** and Sky Movies HD channels for the very first time, which will take the total number of HD channels on Virgin Media to 30.

Cindy Rose, executive director of digital entertainment said: “As the new home of HD telly, we’re delighted to bring our customers Sky Sports in HD at incredibly competitive rates. With the rapid growth of HD content, customers are demanding more and more from their TV service, and with our growing range of HD channels and on demand content in HD, Virgin Media is the best place for the whole families’ entertainment needs.”

To capitalise on the new football season, Virgin Media will be launching an extensive marketing campaign which kicks-off from today. Focusing on the ‘perfect packages’ suitable for different audiences for footy such as fans, followers or absolute fanatics, the ads will bring to life Virgin Media’s bundle savings and flexible options through a range of broadcast, print, outdoor and online media, as well as innovative social media activity.

Five HD comes to Sky HD and Virgin

Fancy watching Neighbours or Home and Away in super sharp high-definition? Five HD launches today and is available to anyone with a subscription to Sky or Virgin Media.

Both Sky and Virgin Media have added Five HD – a high-definition (HD) simulcast of the main Five channel – to their HD channel line-ups today.

The channel offers viewers high-definition episodes of popular Aussie soaps Neighbours and Home and Away, as well as hit American dramas such as The Mentalist, Grey’s Anatomy and Law & Order.

Five HD will also show HD sporting coverage including Cricket on Five and Europa League football.

Charles Constable, Five’s director of strategy, said: “Our programme schedule is more suited to HD than that any other major free-to-air commercial broadcaster given the wide range of high quality series we broadcast, such as our top-rated line-up of US dramas.”

Five HD is the 42nd channel to join Sky’s HD line-up, and the satellite TV giant has promised subscribers a further eight high-definition channels by Christmas 2010. Sky TV customers with a Sky+HD set-top box and a subscription to the HD pack will be able to watch Five HD on channel 171.

Britain’s 3.7 million Virgin Media cable TV customers will also have access to the channel, which is available at no extra monthly cost to homes with a V+HD or V HD set-top box. Five HD is available on channel 150 with Virgin TV.

The launch of Five HD comes after the news from regulator Ofcom that the channel will not launch on Freeview before 2012, after the broadcaster failed to supply a launch date or programming schedule.

Five, which has also recently been put up for sale by its parent company RTL, pulled out of Project Canvas last week as it can “no longer commit to funding its share” of the £16million on-demand TV venture.

Sky News and ITV Launch Campaigns to Promote HD

Posted in Sky+HD Offers on April 8th, 2010

ITV1 and Sky HD will both launch marketing campaigns to promote ITV1 HD and Sky News HD respectively, as competition in the high-definition TV market builds up.

Tomorrow (9 April), ITV will launch a campaign called ‘The brighter side just got brighter” across its family of channels to promote the new ITV1 HD channel.

The ad, produced by ITV’s in-house team ITV Creative, stars TV presenters Ant and Dec discussing what high-definition will mean, as they travel from a modest studio, through increasingly HD scenes. The ad will be shown in cinemas later in the year.

ITV’s accompanying outdoor, press and online ad, created by Bartle Bogle Hegarty and planned by WPP’s Mindshare, includes a behind-the-scenes shot of a range of ITV talent, including comedian Harry Hill and actress Katherine Kelly.

David Pemsel, group marketing director of ITV, said, “Beyond the functional benefits, high definition heightens the emotional benefit of the ITV1 channel brand itself. Each execution of the campaign aims to be a rich experience in itself. This is an opportunity to drive brand reputation, as well as viewing.”

ITV is also launching new idents called ‘Lanterns’, ‘Sunflowers’, ‘Snakes and Ladders’ and ‘Dodgems’ which were directed by Pliex at Blink, and include an updated ITV1 logo.

Sky News is to launch it its first major marketing campaign, which will highlight its coverage of the upcoming election in high definition this Saturday (10 April).

The seven figure outdoor and on-air campaign will run from Saturday until beyond the 6 May General Election.

Initially, the Sky News activity will focus on the upcoming Sky News Debate between the parliamentary party leaders, which will be shown in high definition. The debate is a prelude to the launch of Sky News HD, which a Sky spokesman said was imminent.

The Sky News campaign, designed by Engine group creative agency WCRS, features close-ups of the three main UK party leaders under the tagline “Nothing gets you closer”, and aims to highlight the strength of Sky News’ editorial output and the quality of the on-screen image.

The media, which has been planned and bought by Sky’s media agency WPP’s MediaCom, includes planned airtime on terrestrial networks alongside ads on Sky’s channels and radio, online and outdoor.

John Ryley, head of Sky News, said: “Sky News’ first major marketing campaign underlines that, whether on mobile, online, radio, or now in high definition, Sky News gets you closer to breaking news.”

Freeview is to launch a new free high definition (HD) TV service later.

BBC, ITV and Channel 4 HD channels will be offered on Freeview HD, as well as up to 50 standard definition channels.

Viewers will need a new set top box connected to an HD Ready TV, or a TV with built-in Freeview HD to receive the service.

The launch comes just before the football World Cup this summer, when both the BBC and ITV will be showing matches in HD on Freeview.

Freeview HD boxes are already available to buy from around £140, while TVs with built in Freeview HD have just been introduced this month. Freeview+ HD recorders will also be available later this Spring.

Viewers will only need to update their equipment if they want to watch the new HD channels on Freeview, otherwise their existing set top boxes will continue to receive all of the current standard definition channels.
Those who currently own an HD Ready TV, or one with built-in Freeview, will not be able to receive the service without a Freeview HD set top box. HD Ready TVs bearing the Freeview HD logo will also have the capability.
